At £250,000 price tag (starting), the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is set to go down as the most expensive SUV on the planet. Despite being an SUV, this Rolls-Royce still looks like a classic Rolls-Royce and no one is going to mistake its heritage while out on the road. The blocky front-end exudes confidence and the sharp edges are plenty distinctive.
Recently, Ford Motors announced that it was shedding most of its cars produced in the United States, instead focusing on SUVs and crossovers. Other companies have likewise been shifting towards SUVs. Yet many ultra-luxury car markers have hesitated to jump into this particular ring. Indeed, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan marks the first SUV for the historic company.
Ultra-luxury car makers generally offer incremental refinement. Of course, when you’re at the highest end, it’s hard to do anything that isn’t “incremental.” However, for Rolls-Royce, an SUV signifies that the company has seen the future and is reacting pro-actively to changing consumer tastes.
With the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, it seems that the company already knows what it’s doing. Besides the great looks, this SUV will be powered by a powerful Rolls-Royce engine. The twin-turbo 6.75 litre V12 engine likely won’t be sipping gas, but it will be cranking out power. 563 bhp and 850 Nm of torque, to be specific.
That engine will be coupled with a ZF 8-Speed gearbox. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan will top out at 155 MPH, which is more than respectable for a SUV. Oh, and (of course) the rear doors will be hinged at the back, per Rolls-Royce tradition.
