Self Driving Cars: The Wave Of The Future

Self Driving Cars

There is no feeling like the power of the vehicle beneath your foot on a sunny day with the tunes blasting as you cruise down the road. You feel free, you feel in control, and you feel alive with the excitement of controlling your destiny even if you are just heading to the market to pick up groceries! On the other hand we all know how tiresome being stuck in traffic on the way to work can be. Your car inches forward, the cars in front of you inch forward, frustration levels begin to rise and by the time you reach work you feel like you have fought in a battle. If only you could put the car on autopilot and catch up on some much needed sleep on your commute to work.

The idea of a self driving car has been around since the earliest 20th century shortly after the automobile was invented. The first radio controlled car test was done in 1925 in New York City and there were numerous people in the 20th century that predicted that by now we would only have autonomous cars.

Many automakers like Tesla, Ford, Volvo, Audi, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and many others are working on technology to provide their customers with self driving cars in the near future and they have been running road tests for a few years. Singapore already has self driving taxis. The autonomous car will be here shortly but there have been a few setbacks along the way.

It is no secret that Tesla has had some problems with their self driving cars. In May 2016 in Williston, Florida there was a tragic accident between their autonomous car and an 18 wheel tractor trailer that killed the driver of the car. They have also received numerous lawsuits against them regarding the self driving features that they have in their current vehicles that are on the road. Despite these setbacks Tesla has announced plans to have a driverless car due a test run from Los Angeles to New York City before the end of 2017. They expect to be able to start selling autonomous vehicles in 2018.

The US Congress is currently working on the laws that will make it legal for autonomous vehicles to drive the roads. Right now the laws vary from state to state and many of them only allow self driving vehicles in a testing capacity.

It looks like driverless cars are the wave of the future but it will be years before they are the only ones on the road. Until then you can continue to enjoy the freedom of driving on a sunny day and the knowledge that you are in control of your own destiny.
