Singer Vehicle Design Flaunts Restored 911s – Luxemburg & Minnesota

Singer Porsche 911 Luxemburg & Minnesota

They say money can’t buy happiness: It can, however, buy you a classic Porsche from Singer Vehicle Design, which tells me whoever made that saying probably never laid his eyes on any of the 50 911’s the California-based shop has restored since its inception in 2009.

In fact, if you have enough of it, you can buy yourself two of Singer’s coveted creations, like a certain customer who now proudly owns two immaculate 964’s. The man from Minnesota with a penchant for Porsches recently brought them out to The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, to be shown alongside a diverse collection of privately-owned Singers.

Singer Porsche 911 Luxemburg

The first is a 1990 964 Targa called “Luxemburg,” named after a small township in Minnesota, the state in which our unnamed customer resides, and is apparently very proud of.

Starting with the removable top we find it’s been redone in carbon fiber, but that the composite finish stays hidden underneath a navy canvas fabric covering — tasteful yet functional. The Targa hoop directly behind the top has also been reworked, this particular piece in Singer’s golden nickel-plate finish. A minor detail we call attention to is the reduction in the number of air filter louvers found on the sides of the Targa hoop: An original 1965 Targa would have three, whereas Luxemburg has two.

Power comes from an air-cooled, 4.0-liter flat-six crafted by legendary race-engine builder Ed Pink of Van Nuys, California. That particular unit produces up to 390hp and 315lb-ft., although we’re unsure of the exact specs for this particular Targa; all of it gets routed to a traditional row-your-own six-speed.

We have to talk about Luxemburg’s psychedelic “Tyler Tartan” interior, a leather weave pattern featuring seven different colors. They include two oranges, four shades of blue and one cream color. The blue and orange theme remains consistent throughout the interior and exterior as the remaining bits of the interior are also finished in navy, and pop nicely against the “Deep Orange” body.

Next up is “Minnesota,” a restored 1994 964 Coupe, and again, we see a strong nod to our owner’s home state.

Minnesota is a little less in your face than Luxemburg, but still gorgeous nonetheless. Our man opted for a Gunmetal Gray exterior, which really brings out the lines of the Coupe’s body and sets the perfect backdrop for the flashes of amber, gold and exposed metal adorning all the right places of Minnesota’s sensual curves.

As we peer inside Minnesota, I can’t help but remark to myself that this gentleman has great taste — the overall theme reminds one of the type of bespoke coat a dignified Englishman would wear on a crisp, fall day. Tobacco Brown leather touches most of the interior surfaces, including the roll bar, with carbon fiber-esque mixed weave suede inserts, lined with brass grommets, used for the front and rear seat centers and door panels.

You’ll find a Cosworth-tuned 3.8-liter flat-six out back, making in the neighborhood of 350hp — again, mated to a six-speed manual.

If you didn’t get to catch any Singers at Monterey Car Week, fret not: The Porsche expert has a reported 80 more 911s currently commissioned for restoration.

Remember, money may not be able to buy happiness, but it can buy you motoring perfection.
