The New BMW Z4 Concept Revealed

New BMW Z4 Concept

It would seem that the BMW’s Z4 Series has kind of lost its luster lately, eclipsed by the radiance of the 4 and 6 series. However, if you take a look at some of the latest pictures of the Z4 Concept, the Z4 could well be staging a dramatic comeback. The fluid design and original BMW perfection on quality all pave the way for a magnificent creation in the making.

There are those who have accused BMW of becoming a ‘luxury crossover’ company. However, the BMW Z4 Concept negates those accusations. This fab new roadster draws its character from the recent 8 series concept design, which had both looks and performance to match it. The new car emulates typical roadster characters like a long wheelbase, long silhouette, and a compressed rear. The shorter bonnet keeps the driver more to the center of the car, however, in contravention of previous roadsters. This feature gives the car a tighter contact with the road.

Well-designed Aesthetics

The distinctive color is well-chosen with the car and for what it stands. The interior is also well-planned, and lots of thought has gone into making a bold but appropriate design statement. Seats are well-defined with two-tone colors of the driver seat and passenger seat respectively.

Roadster, not a Coupe

BMW has allied with Toyota for manufacturing the new Z4 Concept and is adamant that this is a roadster and not a coupe. The electronics and drivetrain will be solely by BMW, but they will jointly manufacture other more complex aspects like chassis, suspension and other mechanical components. To distinguish between two cars being introduced by both manufacturers at roughly the same time, BMW will launch the roadster version, while Toyota will do the coupe version.

Under the Hood

As usual, all eyes are on what BMW has put under the hood. There will be a revised 2.0. 4-cylinder engine, upgradable to the Turbo Inline Six. Both automatic and manual transmission will be available, to give the flexibility to drive options. About more information, we can only answer this with two words – details awaited!

Where and When?

The new BMW Z4 Concept is expected to be unveiled at the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach later this year and based on this, we could expect the actual production to start early next year, and we should be able to see the new car on the streets from the latter part of 2018.

According to BMW’s senior VP, Adrian van Hooydonk, this new roadster is an “all-out driving machine.” It is a car stripped down to bare essentials which give the driver a supreme driving experience. The Z4 Concept he says gives the driver ‘total freedom’. Hooydonk goes onto talk about the ‘BMW design language’ which he says that they express from ‘all perspectives in all details.’

Our Point of View

From the racing world, the new BMW Z4 concept doesn’t seem to have anything earth-shattering to offer. However, details are rather sketchy as BMW hasn’t officially unveiled this car yet. After the car is released and we know more about the performance and statistics of this new roadster, we will be able to get a clearer picture of how it is likely to stand among the other great sports cars of our times.
