2025 BMW M5 Plug-In Hybrid Revealed
This fall, BMW’s performance division will unveil the seventh-generation M5, a groundbreaking iteration of its flagship model that promises to redefine high-performance sedans. For the first time, the M5 will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, significantly altering its performance dynamics and weight.
The heart of the new M5 is its innovative powertrain, which combines a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor. Together, they produce an astounding 717 horsepower and 738 ft-lbs of torque (577 hp from the engine and 194 hp from the electric motor). This is a substantial increase from the outgoing M5 Competition, which delivered 627 hp and 553 ft-lbs of torque. The electric motor, integrated into the eight-speed manual transmission, draws power from a 14.8-kWh battery located in the vehicle’s floor. Despite the added weight, the M5 retains impressive performance credentials, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and achieving a top speed of 155 mph, which can be increased to 190 mph with BMW’s optional Driver’s Package. In electric-only mode, the sedan has a range of 25 miles and can reach speeds of up to 87 mph.
However, this leap in power comes with a notable increase in weight and size. The new M5 is 1.2 inches longer, 0.9 inches longer between the wheels, 2.7 inches wider, and 2.1 inches taller than its predecessor, tipping the scales at a hefty 5,390 pounds. This makes it 1,153 pounds heavier than the model it replaces and a staggering 2,238 pounds heavier than the original M5.
In classic M car fashion, the M5 sports a more aggressive and extreme design compared to the standard 5 Series and i5. Its sharper, more sculpted look, particularly at the front with revised kidney grilles, clearly signals its high-performance nature. While the bold aesthetics might not appeal to everyone, they unmistakably communicate the car’s engineered speed and power. Inside, the M5 maintains the luxurious feel of the 5 Series but adds distinctive touches like extensive carbon-fiber trim and a new three-spoke M steering wheel, enhancing its sporty ambiance.
The new BMW M5 for sale will make its public debut at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, with sales commencing later in the fall. Pricing starts at $120,675, reflecting an $11,000 increase over the previous version. This significant price hike underscores the advanced technology and enhanced performance that this new generation brings to the table.
