BMW Skytop Concept: Limited Edition Tribute to the Z8
BMW has just unveiled a breathtaking new open-top concept inspired by the legendary Z8. Named the Concept Skytop, this stunning vehicle was showcased at the prestigious Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza in Italy over the past weekend. This handbuilt beauty, reminiscent of last year’s Concept Touring Coupe based on the BMW Z4, is based on the 8 Series Convertible, with additional inspiration from the iconic BMW Z8. There are hints that this ultra-exclusive model could see a limited production run, much like its rival Mercedes’ PureSpeed prototype.
The Skytop takes the already impressive 8 Series Convertible to a new aesthetic level. The most striking feature is the open top, with roof panels that can be conveniently stored in the trunk. The car’s front fascia has been heavily revised, featuring smaller, illuminated kidney grilles and razor-thin LED headlights. The lines of the prototype are more defined, echoing the aggressive styling of BMW’s M cars, and a striking center spine runs from the sculpted hood to the rear deck lid. Light alloy wheels with gill-like lamellas complete the stunning exterior look.
Inside, the Skytop features a plush cabin, albeit one that lacks the exterior’s stylistic daring. The rear seats have been replaced with a roll-over protection bar, but other elements remain largely borrowed from the 8 Series. The cabin may be luxurious, but it doesn’t quite match the boldness of the exterior design.
Under the hood, the Skytop surprises with a powerful gas engine, diverging from BMW’s recent electric Vision Neue Klasse concepts. While specific performance figures were not disclosed, BMW hinted that the vehicle would feature the company’s most powerful V-8 powertrain. This suggests it might house the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine found in the BMW M8 Competition, which generates 617 hp and 553 ft lbs of torque. With the M8 Competition capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in just three seconds, the Skytop is poised to be an exceptionally fast car.
Though still a concept, the Skytop has generated significant buzz, with speculation that BMW may produce 50 examples of this handbuilt marvel. While no pricing details have been announced, it is expected to command a price significantly higher than the range-topping 8 Series Convertible M8 Competition, which starts at around $150,000. If produced, the Skytop promises to be a rare and exquisite addition to BMW’s storied lineup.
