2024 SEMA Show Highlights
The 2024 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, currently underway at the Las Vegas Convention Center from November 5 to 8, has unveiled a plethora of innovations and trends in the automotive aftermarket industry. This year’s event has been particularly notable for its emphasis on electric vehicle (EV) concepts, classic car restorations, and advancements in automotive technology.
Electric Vehicle Innovations
A significant highlight of the show has been the introduction of rugged EV concepts. Kia showcased two adventure-themed models: the EV9-based ADVNTR and the PBV-based WKNDR. The ADVNTR features a three-inch lift over the standard EV9, coupled with robust wheel and tire combinations, making it suitable for off-road excursions. The WKNDR, built on Kia’s Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV), offers a customizable interior designed for various outdoor activities. Both models are equipped with modular features such as onboard compressors, mobile pantries, and renewable energy solutions, including built-in solar panels and hydro-turbine wheels for battery recharging.
Mopar, the parts and accessories division of Stellantis, presented a 1967 Plymouth GTX “electromod”, a classic muscle car converted into an electric vehicle. This restomod serves as a glimpse into the future of electric conversions for vintage cars, utilizing Mopar’s e-Crate propulsion systems. The vehicle retains its classic design while incorporating modern electric drivetrain technology, highlighting the potential for blending heritage with innovation.
Classic Car Restorations
Renowned custom car builders, the Ringbrothers, unveiled “INVADR,” a 1987 Buick Grand National boasting a twin-turbo V-6 engine producing 1,246 horsepower. This build features a six-speed manual transmission, air jacks, a Roadster Shop chassis, and a custom gray body, exemplifying the fusion of classic aesthetics with modern performance enhancements.
In addition, the Ringbrothers introduced “Tuka,” a 1972 Chevrolet K5 Blazer equipped with a 525-horsepower LS3 engine and Toyota suspension components. This build showcases the versatility and creativity in customizing classic SUVs to meet contemporary performance standards.
Technological Advancements
The SEMA FutureTech Studio made a return this year, focusing on advancements in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle technologies. Attendees have the opportunity to explore research and development conducted at the SEMA Garage, gaining insights into how vehicle modifications can impact emerging automotive technologies. The studio also features interactive sessions on automotive connectivity, vehicle electrification, and sustainable design, highlighting the industry’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge innovations.
Live Streaming and Accessibility
For the first time, the SEMA Show is live-streaming 31 hours of content, offering a rare glimpse into the event typically reserved for industry professionals. From November 5 to 8, viewers worldwide can tune in to SEMA Live on the show’s YouTube and Facebook channels to experience vehicle reveals, exhibitor highlights, celebrity appearances, and exclusive interviews with industry leaders.
