Top 5 Cars Auctioned at Amelia Island 2016
The 2016 Amelia Island Concours d’elegance did not disappoint, and true to its name showcased a wide variety of cars distinguished for their rarity and elegance. RM Sotheby’s, the event’s official auction house, carried the torch for what proved to be a successful and profitable day. Here are the top five cars of the 2016 auction:
5. 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback Sports Saloon, Sold for $1,815,000
This British Ambassador, chassis BC2LD, is a sporting Bentley that is just four private owners from new. It debuted at Pebble Beach Concours d’elegance in 2009, and the following year won Best in Class at Amelia Island. It was the second chassis to be built with the largest and most powerful 4.9-liter OHV inline six engine that puts out 178-bhp through a 4-speed manual transmission.
4. 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS by Pininfarina, Sold for $2,000,000
This Ferrari is rarity personified. With only 99 examples built, this highly sought after marque which was first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show of October 1966, was the replacement for the 275 GTS and identical to the 330 GTC revealed in Geneva a few months earlier. Its stylistic design turned heads, and its specifications endeared. With its 4-liter SOHC V12 and five speed manual transmission, this beauty put out 300-bhp boasts a top speed of 150-mph.
3. 2014 Pagani Huayra, sold for $2,035,000
After the success of the Zonda, Pagani went to the drawing board to craft another masterpiece. This time for the American market. The result was this 720-hp, 6.0-liter twin turbo Mercedes-AMG V12, with 7-speed automated manual transmission. This beauty is just 400 miles from new and has over $260,000 worth of options of nips, tucks and upgrades.
2. 1984 Ferrari 288 GTO, Sold for $2,585,000
Of the 272 288 GTO’s built, this car, chassis 55237, is 137th and the first of its kind officially delivered to Japan. Though denied the opportunity to best its predecessor in motorsport, the second GTO still left a massive impression on the minds and hearts of Ferrari enthusiasts. This 2.8-liter V8 with twin IHI turbos put out 400-hp with 366 pounds of torque. It could sprint from 0 to 60-mph in 4.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 189-mph.
1. 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica LWB Aerodinamico by Pininfarina, Sold for $4,400,000
Only 18 of these were built and this is the second example to be auctioned by Sotheby’s in 2016. The first was the highest sale recorded at the Paris auction on February 3rd at $3,245,000. This car, chassis 3949 SA, was the 1962 Turin Automobile Show Car and is only four family owners from new. Through a 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive it puts out 340-bhp from a 4-liter SOHC V12 engine.
