Ferrari 488 GTB vs Lamborghini Huracan

Do you hear that whistle of turbochargers in the distance? That’s right, it’s time for a comparison of two great Italian supercars! This time, we’re taking a look at the Ferrari 488 GTB and the Lamborghini Huracan. To call these two “great cars” would be an understatement, they are after all hailing from two of the most respected marques in the world. But which one is better? It’s a tough choice to make, but by the end of this article I hope things are a little more clear.

First up, let’s take a look at power. Chances are, that’s what you’re most interested in, no one buys a supercar to take it grocery shopping. If you did decide to roll down to Walmart in your Ferrari like a particularly insecure and newly-indebted emir, you’ll be embarking on the quickest shopping trip of your life. The 488 GTB is powered by a beautiful yet compact V8, with a displacement of just 3.9 liters. That may not sound like a lot, but it does a lot with it. The top speed is over 211 mph, and the car takes just 3 seconds to hit 60. You’d better like your groceries shaken, and indeed stirred.

Lamborghini Huracan

What about the Huracan? Well, the Lambo has a more traditional-sized engine, a 5.2 liter V10, and hits a top speed of 201 mph. Acceleration to 62 mph is done in 3.2 seconds. Still superb then, but this round goes solidly to the 488 GTB. Despite its smaller engine, a combination of brilliant engineering efforts that include Ferrari’s famed aluminium construction and a highly aerodynamic body allow it to win out.

On the aesthetic front, they’re both winners. It will come down to personal preference which one you prefer: the sharp, angular construction of the Huracan or the sleek lines of the 488. Inside, the Huracan is fairly plastic heavy, but it’s done well, we’re not talking about Dodge Neon style fit here. The only real issue is head and legroom: it’s a fairly cramped cabin if you’re tall. It’s a similar story in the 488 GTB: the finish is decent, but not amazing. However, the head and legroom is far better for taller occupants, and there’s enough space to ensure you won’t be cracking each other on the elbows. The trunk is also of a reasonable enough size; it could carry your golf bag to the green if you wanted it to.

In terms of handling, both are wonderful machines. The Ferrari 488 GTB feels similar to the 458 Italia, handling rough roads well and it isn’t even a challenging drive on the track. Its dampeners and various functions make it a joy, and not an intimidating joy at that, to drive in any environment. Driving the Huracan is more akin to the older supercars you may have experienced before. Somewhat hard to get used to, and with fairly loose steering, it’s more challenging, but still a lot of fun.

Ultimately, the 488 GTB is a better car where it counts. If it seems as though I’m being harsh on the Huracan at all, I want to state that it too, is a great car. If you ever get the opportunity to own one, it would be churlish to turn it down. That being said, when it’s held up against the Ferrari 488 GTB, there can only be one winner: the Ferrari is better made, better to drive, and just plain better.
