Aston Martin DBS 59 Pays Homage to Le Mans Win
Aston Martin’s newest model, the DBS Superleggera, is getting a special edition, the “DBS 59.” Commissioned by Aston Martin’s Cambridge dealership (England) and built by the company’s “Q” division, just 24 of the DBS 59’s will be built.
The numbers here are important. First, only 24 of the cars will be made because the DBS 59’s are a celebration of the 24 hour Le Mans race. Second, 59 commemorates Aston Martin’s 1-2 victory in 1959, when their DBR1’s took first and second place.
Last year, a DBR1 sold for a record-setting $22.55 million, which was then the most ever paid for a British car at auction. So yeah, the DBR1 is a bit of a big deal, and the DBS 59s are likewise likely to become hot collector’s items.
Aston Martin is doing more than just using similar naming conventions. Each unit will be painted in the company’s famous Aston Martin Racing Green paint. The similarities run deeper than the paint as well.
While design languages have evolved tremendously over the past several decades, there’s no denying the DBS 59’s resemblance to the DBR1. The rounded headlights, short trunk, and long hood all resemble the past Le Mans winner.
Power wise, the DBS 59 will get a 5.2 liter V-12 and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both are found in the regular DBS Superleggera. The engine cranks over 715 horsepower, allowing the DBS to hit 211 miles per hour. This makes it the fastest Aston Martin ever put into production.
