De Tomaso P72: A Retro-Inspired Supercar

De Tomaso P72

De Tomaso is making waves once again with the P72, a $1.6 million supercar that combines retro inspiration with cutting-edge engineering. Dubbed the “Modern Day Time Machine,” this striking model is a tribute to the ill-fated P70 collaboration between Carroll Shelby and Alejandro de Tomaso. While the P70 never saw the light of day, the P72 promises to honor its legacy with style, power, and exclusivity.

Originally unveiled in 2019, the P72 has been a long time coming. The project faced significant delays, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which raised concerns that it might share the same unfortunate fate as its predecessor. Now, five years later, De Tomaso has unveiled the first production-spec example, chassis 001, signaling that the P72 is ready for final dynamic evaluations before entering production.

The design of the P72 stays true to its original concept. Its carbon-fiber body retains the same dramatic curves and vintage-inspired aesthetics that turned heads in 2019. However, some changes have been made to enhance its functionality. Instead of sharing a carbon-fiber tub with the Apollo Intensa Emozione, the P72 features a custom chassis developed with German motorsports firm HWA. This change ensures better safety and improved interior space, offering more headroom and legroom for drivers and passengers.

Under the hood, the P72 is a true powerhouse. It is equipped with a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine, reminiscent of the second-generation Ford GT’s powerplant. This mill churns out over 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque, promising exhilarating performance on the road. With only 72 units planned for production, the P72 is as exclusive as it is expensive. Each example carries a starting price of €1.6 million (approximately $1.67 million), making it a highly coveted collector’s piece.

De Tomaso isn’t stopping with the P72. The automaker has hinted at a more hardcore supercar, the V-12-powered P900, which is expected to push the brand’s boundaries even further.

For enthusiasts, the P72 represents more than just a car; it’s a revival of De Tomaso’s storied history and a bold step into the future of supercar innovation.
