Elva: McLaren’s Latest Sports Car

McLaren Elva

What does it take to earn the title of the lightest, most extreme McLaren ever? This car is being built for one purpose: speed. You won’t get some of the usual creature comforts, however, like a roof or even a windshield. Those would add too much weight.

Besides doing away with certain parts of the Elva, McLaren also worked hard to keep the parts that remained light. The chassis is made out of carbon fiber. So too are the body panels and brakes. In fact, even the seats are made out of carbon fiber. Add it all up and you have the lightest McLaren ever produced, weighing in at just 1,198kg.

Yet just because there’s no windshield, that doesn’t mean you’ll have to contend with harsh winds while driving. McLaren installed a unique new system on the Elva. If you look closely, you’ll see a vent on the nose. That vent collects air and pumps it into the open air cabin, creating a bubble that will shield the passenger and driver from wind. Of course, rain and dust is a whole other matter.

Meanwhile, an immensely powerful 4-liter V8 engine is crammed under the hood. Capable of cranking out over 800 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, this offers more than enough power for the Eva and allows it to hit sixty miles per hour in under 3 seconds. The Elva can also reach 124 miles per hour in just 6.7 seconds.
