Maserati GranCabrio Folgore: World’s Fastest EV Convertible
The Italian automotive scene is buzzing with excitement as Maserati unveils the Folgore variant of its celebrated GranCabrio model, marking a significant leap forward in the realm of electric vehicles (EVs). This iteration not only broadens the GranCabrio lineup but also establishes it as the fastest electric convertible in the world, a title that resonates with both speed enthusiasts and eco-conscious drivers.
The Maserati GranCabrio Folgore has been highly anticipated since hints of its arrival emerged in late 2022. Built on the framework of the hard-top GranTurismo Folgore, this model shares a sleek, aerodynamically refined shape with its coupe counterpart, minus the exhaust pipes, and is adorned with distinctive Folgore badging. The convertible distinguishes itself with a luxurious interior that comfortably seats four. The front seats are 18-way adjustable and include built-in neck warmers—a thoughtful touch for open-air driving. Although leather upgrades are available, the standard Econyl upholstery—crafted from recycled nylon—offers a luxe aesthetic without compromising environmental ideals.
A key feature of the GranCabrio Folgore is its agile soft top, which can be operated at speeds up to 31 mph and folds neatly into the trunk, maximizing cargo space without sacrificing the vehicle’s elegant profile. This design efficiency is matched by formidable technical specs. The Folgore model is equipped with an advanced 800-volt powertrain that includes three electric motors: one at the front and two at the rear. Together, these motors produce an impressive 751 horsepower, with a “MaxBoost” mode that temporarily increases output to 818 horsepower.
Performance-wise, the GranCabrio Folgore is a marvel, capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, reaching 120 mph in nine seconds, and achieving a top speed of 181 mph. These figures not only surpass those of any other electric convertible but also ensure that the Folgore variant stands out as an emblem of both luxury and performance.
The energy for this powerful setup is supplied by an 83.0-kWh T-shaped battery pack, estimated to offer a range of 273 miles under the WLTP test cycle. This range is ample for leisurely weekend excursions, aligning with the typical usage scenarios envisioned for a grand tourer like the GranCabrio. Additionally, the battery can be recharged from 20 to 80 percent in a mere 20 minutes with a DC fast charger, adding convenience to its list of attributes.
With the introduction of the GranCabrio Folgore, Maserati now offers a trio of electric models under the Folgore marque, including the GranTurismo and the Grecale SUV, alongside an electric powerboat dubbed the Tridente. While the official release date and price for the GranCabrio Folgore remain under wraps, it is expected to debut as a 2025 model before the year’s end and will likely command a premium well above the $189,900 starting price of the 2024 GranCabrio Trofeo. This new Maserati for sale is not just a step forward in automotive design but a bold stride towards the electrified future of luxury convertibles.
