The McLaren 765LT is one heck of a hyper car. Fast, sleek, nimble. But it’s also a hyper car that’s best left to the racetrack and not for daily driving. Lighter and quicker than the McLaren 720S, this hyper car puts in an excellent performance and will leave a lot of cars in the rear-view mirror, but at the cost of a comfortable ride.
Weighing less than 3,000 pounds, the McLaren 765LT is much faster off the line than the 720S. Yet when it comes to the freeway or trips around town, you may be better served by the 720S. Why’s that? The McLaren 765LT has been designed from the tires up for pure track performance. Stiff engine mounts and tough ceramic brakes make for excellent but bone rattling performance.
Meanwhile, the McLaren’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine has been fine tuned to provide extra performance. Ultimately, the 4.0 cranks out 755 hp at 7,500 rpm along with 590 feet pounds of torque at 5,500 rpm.
This ample engine output allows the McLaren 765LT to hit 60 in about 2.7 seconds, making it one of the fastest cars in the world off the line. The McLaren 765LT also reaches a more than respectable 205 miles per hour top speed.
This extra performance forced McLaren’s engineers to head back to the drawing board for some much-needed tweaks. Side blades and other adjustments greatly increase downforce, helping the McLaren 765LT stick to the road.
Yet all told, the McLaren 765LT is a rough ride as far as daily driving is concerned and may be a bit too much to handle. For the track, however, few cars will be able to keep up. The 765LT will cost roughly $358,000, with 765 slotted for production.
