Mercedes-AMG One Sets New Nürburgring Record
The Mercedes-AMG One, a hypercar that’s been turning heads since its debut, has once again made history. Mercedes’ $2.7 million futuristic marvel recently shattered its own record at the iconic Nürburgring-Nordschleife, becoming the first street-legal car to complete a lap in under 6 minutes and 30 seconds. The hypercar, inspired by Formula 1 technology, previously held the record for the fastest street-legal lap time, which it set two years ago, but this time, it has truly outdone itself.
Driven by Marco Engel, the Mercedes-AMG One completed the track in an astonishing 6:29.090. This is over six seconds faster than its previous record of 6:35.183, achieved in November 2022. What’s even more remarkable is that the 2022 lap was already eight seconds faster than the earlier record for street-legal cars. So, how did the AMG One manage to slice another six seconds off its already blistering pace?
Interestingly, the car itself hasn’t changed. The difference came down to the conditions and experience. Mercedes had previously mentioned that the weather conditions during its first record-breaking attempt were less than ideal. In 2022, parts of the track were still damp, affecting the car’s performance. This time around, however, the track surface was completely dry, providing optimal grip for the high-performance vehicle to unleash its full potential. Additionally, Engel and the AMG team have had two years to familiarize themselves with the car, which may have played a role in the improved time.
In their official statement, Mercedes said the driver took full advantage of the car’s advanced features, including the “Race Plus” mode, Energy Flow Control, and Drag Reduction systems. These high-tech components, derived from Formula 1 technology, allow the car to balance performance and aerodynamics in a way few other vehicles can match.
Reflecting on the achievement, Engel said, “Two years ago, the conditions were not ideal, and some sections of the track were still a little damp. We knew we could do more, and we wanted to show that. Today we were able to demonstrate the maximum potential of the AMG One.”
The AMG One’s latest feat shouldn’t come as a shock to automotive enthusiasts. Powered by a 1.6-liter V6 engine and four electric motors, the hypercar produces over 1,000 horsepower. In addition to its latest Nürburgring success, it has also set records at the Hockenheimring, the Red Bull Ring, and the Monza circuit, further proving that Mercedes-AMG is pushing the limits of what’s possible with a street-legal car.
