Porsche Sable MK1 Prototype For Sale

The Porsche-Sabel Mk1 Prototype, an iconic creation, marks the beginning of an illustrious automotive legacy. Assembled in the early 1960s by the skilled hands of John Sabel himself, this unique car was his personal masterpiece. The construction of this Porsche for sale began in the fall of 1963 and was completed the following year.

John Sabel, a passionate car fanatic hailing from California, began his automotive journey at a young age, investing his hard-earned money in his first car, a Model A Ford roadster. Over the years, he progressed through various trades, acquiring Joe Huffaker’s 1929 Ford Coupe with a modified V8 flathead engine. John’s love for cars led him to become an early member of the Marin Coupe and Roadster Club.

With a rented garage in Rockville, MD, John meticulously designed and built the Mk1 Prototype. Employing a male plug made of lathe and plaster around a 1952 VW pan, he created molds used for hand-laminating fiberglass to shape the body. Later, the molds were sent to Anderson Industries in Jessup, MD, to produce around 20 more of these remarkable cars.

The Mk1 Prototype featured a Porsche foundation, including front and rear suspension, brakes, gearbox, and a motor from the 356b platform. Embracing its Porsche heritage, the car rolled on 550 Spyder wheels, with wheel wells tailored to fit them perfectly. This configuration was showcased in the 1964 Hershey Hill Climb, leaving a lasting impression on enthusiasts.

In 1966, John passed the reins of the car to Ralph Williams, who continued its racing legacy. In 1967, Ralph’s exceptional performance qualified the car for The American Road Race of Champions at Daytona, securing an impressive 2nd place in DSR and 5th overall. The car then found its way to Dick Williams, who passionately raced it in numerous events.

Gordon Kerr, a dentist from Manassas, VA, took ownership in 1970, but unfortunately, the car’s activity dwindled, remaining largely unused for 34 years. Sean Kalil, a young car enthusiast, breathed new life into the car by acquiring it in 2004, but familial obligations stalled his restoration efforts.

In 2005, Chuck Goldsborough, known for his exploits with Team Lexus in IMSA, took up the mantle of reviving the Mk1 Prototype. Intent on restoring it to its former glory, Chuck embarked on the project but found it difficult to prioritize amid other Porsche endeavors.

Finally, in 2012, the passionate Michael Ballo received the car from Goldsborough and began an extensive restoration journey. With Peter Dawe of Dawe’s Motorsports overseeing the process under John Sabel’s watchful eye, the car was restored to its original configuration and livery in 2012.

In a heartwarming reunion, 50 years after its debut, the prototype Porsche-Sabel roared once more, conquering the hill at the 2014 Hershey Hillclimb, joined by its original designer, builder, and driver, John Sabel. This remarkable automotive legend continues to inspire enthusiasts, carrying the spirit of its creator through the ages.
