Porsche Sets New World Record For Fastest Indoor Speed
When you think of fastest land speed records, your mind might be drawn to the salt flats where drivers often push the limits with their engines (or in some cases, rockets!) Porsche recently set a speed record, but this time they skipped the flats. Driving an all-electric Porsche Taycan Turbo S, racer Leh Keen hit 102.65 miles per hour indoors in New Orleans, besting the previous indoor record by a whooping 13.6 miles per hour.
Keen was racing under some pretty strict rules. He wasn’t allowed a safety net and also couldn’t have a door open (you know, for an escape route.) Keen did get to choose a building, and selected the 1 million square foot Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, which is the largest contiguous exhibit hall in the United States. There was one major drawback, however. The Morial Convention Center uses polished cement, which at high speeds is practically ice.
Still, Keen got the job done in a Porsche Taycan Turbo S, which cranks out 750 horsepower with an all-electric engine. The Taycan Turbo S hits 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds. The indoor speed record marks the fourth world record for Porsche, according to Guinness. Porsche also holds the title for the longest vehicle drift in an electric car, set by Dennis Retera who drifted in a Taycan sideways for 26.2 miles over the course of nearly an hour (yes, 26.2 miles).
Chloe Chambers, just 16 years old, set the slalom record at 47.45 seconds back in August 2020 in a 718 Spyder. Meanwhile, the Porsche Cayenne managed to pull a 376,792 pound Airbus A380, setting the record for heaviest aircraft pulled by a production car.
