Ultra-Rare McLaren F1 Heads To Auction

Creighton Brown McLaren F1

An ultra-rare McLaren F1, renowned for its exclusivity and advanced design, is expected to fetch over $20 million at an upcoming Sotheby’s Sealed auction. This particular model, notable for being the only one finished in Creighton Brown, boasts just over 240 miles on the odometer, making it one of the freshest examples available, akin to purchasing a brand-new vehicle from the late 1990s.

The McLaren F1, which first hit the roads in 1992, quickly set the standard for supercars, largely thanks to the visionary efforts of race car designer Gordon Murray and stylist Peter Stevens. Conceived with the intent to offer unparalleled aesthetics, performance, and driving experience, the F1 was a rarity even during its production years between 1992 and 1998. Out of 106 units produced, only 64 were street-legal. The design, characterized by sleek athletic lines, a distinctive bubble cockpit, and iconic butterfly doors, has left a lasting influence on the McLaren brand. The Creighton Brown exterior, paired with an interior in Light Tan and Brazilian Brown, enhances the vehicle’s distinctive appeal.

McLaren F1 Interior

Mechanically, the F1 was revolutionary. It was the first road car to incorporate a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. It features a powerful naturally aspirated 6.1-liter V-12 BMW engine, delivering 618 hp and 479 ft-lbs of torque. This configuration enabled it to reach speeds over 240 mph, making it the world’s fastest production car for several years.

This model’s rarity is underscored by its meticulous preservation and the array of original accessories accompanying it, including custom luggage matching the interior, a FACOM tool chest, tool roll, and a TAG Heuer 6000 Chronometer designed exclusively for F1 owners. Previously sold in 2021 for $20.47 million, it originally had a lower estimate of $15 million, highlighting its appreciating value over time.

Shelby Myers of RM Sotheby’s likened the McLaren F1 not just to a vehicle but to a “masterpiece,” drawing parallels with other historic automobiles and even timeless artwork found in major museums. The upcoming online auction, scheduled from May 15 to May 17, is anticipated to draw significant interest, potentially exceeding its previous sale price given the model’s iconic status and pristine condition.
