Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Is The Future of Luxury Motoring

Mercedes-Benz brought the spectacular Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept car to last month’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, indicating it may at some point revive the now defunct Maybach brand.

Spanning about “6” meters in length, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is approximately two feet longer than an S-class coupe and sits four inches lower. Mercedes designers pursued an aesthetic philosophy focused on “sensual purity” and “aerodynamic efficiency” while penning the concept 2+2, drawing inspiration from the aero coupes of the 1930s.

The extremely long hood is where the eye is naturally first drawn, and from their it proceeds rearwards, following a body-length chrome “feature line” past the very sleek, low-slung roof, before landing on the rounded “boat tail” rear-end, meant to recall a luxury yacht.

Gullwing doors, 24-inch wheels and a deep red paint job, reminiscent of a young red wine, all add to the luxurious aura of the Maybach 6, which looks like a stretched out Jaguar F-Type when viewed in profile.

Below the traditional Mercedes three-pointed star hood ornament is an imposing chrome grille with 25 vanes. Those who still remember the extinct Maybach 57 and 62 will find its design familiar.

The grille is nothing more than a decorative piece as the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is an electric vehicle. The all-wheel-drive Maybach 6 uses four electric motors, one for each wheel, powered by an 80kWh battery back mounted underneath the floor. Mercedes-Maybach 6

Total power for the electric drivetrain, which is still under development, is quoted at 738hp, good for 0-62mph in less than four seconds and an electronically governed top speed of 155mph. Mercedes also claim a range of over 200 miles.

Using a new quick charging method based on the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard, a five-minute charge could add up to 62 miles of range. The vehicle can also be charged wirelessly.

The interior of the Maybach 6 is a blend of high-tech and classic luxury materials, anchored by a massive heads-up display which spans the length of the front windshield. Occupants can control the geographical and driving-related data shown by the use of hand gestures.

Two button-tufted, white leather seats, whose bottoms recede deeply in the cabin, eventually swoop upwards after passing up over the center console and integrate with the dashboard “wing,” giving the interior the feeling of a lounge. Elm is used for the floor, which looks downright gorgeous against the bright lights of the dash and display, and further continues the yacht-inspired appeal of the Maybach 6.

As for now, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 remains nothing more than a concept, albeit an extremely gorgeous one.
