EPA fuel economy ratings are 15/21 mpg city/highway. SAFETY The NHTSA and IIHS haven’t crash tested the 2018 M5. However, the 2018 5 Series sedan the M5 is based on received a Good score in all crashworthiness tests as well as in the headlights test in IIHS testing (Good is the highest possible score). In the IIHS’ front collision prevention test, the 2018 5 Series received a Superior rating after it avoided a 12-mph and a 25-mph collision (Superior is the highest score for the front crash prevention test). With its high scores, the 2018 5 Series received the 2018 Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. The Driving Assistance Plus package adds the Active Driving Assistant Plus, which bundles together blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist with side collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic jam assist. UTILITY The 2018 M5 has 18.7 cubic feet of trunk space that can be expanded via the standard 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats. WHAT WE THINK In a 2018 First Drive review, we said the new M5 offers blistering acceleration and has regained its agile driving dynamics despite its massive footprint. The 2018 M5 features crisp turn ins and feels right at home on a race track. However, its size does hinder your ability to place it on the narrow roads. Ride comfort does suffer even in its softest setting and can get punishing in more aggressive settings. On the track, the 2018 M5 is right at home and can easily take on corners at high speeds with plenty of traction, allowing you to confidently go faster even with the electronic aids turned off. COOL FACT The 2018 M5’s all-wheel-drive system is one of only a handful of systems that lets you put the car in full rear-wheel drive mode so that you can do smoky burnouts and drift to your heart’s desire.
