1968 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spider by Scaglietti

In the top ten list of most expensive cars ever auctioned there are eight Ferrari’s, one Aston Martin and a Mercedes. The 1968 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spider by Scaglietti, breathe, is expected to take the number four spot of the decidedly more rare 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale, and come in just behind its sibling the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider. That is, if it sells at the higher end of the Sotheby’s $26 million estimate.

Aside from the fact that only ten of this marque were built, this particular NART Spider, chassis 11057, is significant because it was: the last of its kind to be built, the only NART Spider sold new in Europe and the only example that was finished new in Grigio Scuro, an Italian shade of grey.

Luigi Chinetti, the Italian born racecar driver who was a close friend of Enzo Ferrari and the first American Ferrari importer, was initially the only champion for the NART Spider cause. He felt there was a gap in the American market and made plans to fill it with a convertible 275 GTB/4. He originally wanted a 25 production count run but due to low demand only succeeded in procuring 10.

The 275 GTS/4 puts out 300-bhp from a 3,286 cc DOHC Colombo V12 with 6 Weber carburetors and five-speed manual transmission. From the factory, this NART spent time in Spain before moving to England where it was recolored red, sold to a Swede who colored it grey again before being bought by a D.C. car collector who left it in Europe and repainted it the red shade it is currently in. He also had it Ferrari Classiche certified in 2007. In 2009 it was sold to its current owner who will forfeit his right of ownership on May 14th in Monaco, when the population of Ferrari enthusiasts whose pockets are deep enough to procure this historical icon will bid fiercely for its love. Because, what are we to Ferrari’s but suitors for their affections?
