This automaker which has built its brand offering cars with instant torque, zero emissions and incredible power, went back to the drawing board in 2012 to produce what could be another electric car masterpiece, the first crossover utility vehicle, the Model X SUV. Three years later, the launch for the signature series is a couple weeks away—September 29th— with the standard model to follow; and so far there are no indications of delay or missed deadlines heading our way.
This past week, there was a veritable buzz surrounding the Tesla Model X for sale, as Elon Musk inspired with various Tweets about their first SUV’s launch and pricing. Reported to start at $132,000, with a Ludicrous Mode speed upgrade that attracts an additional $10,000 charge, what can we expect from the Model X, outside the price range of most mid-sized SUV buyers, to bring to the table?
Well, this seven-seater SUV is an all-wheel drive, with 259-hp delivered from its front electric motors and 503-hp from the rear ones. Its 90-kilowatt-hour battery has an estimated EPA range of 240 miles on one charge, and the Model X reportedly dashes to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and achieves top speeds of 155 mph. For the more adventurous soccer mom with cash to burn, the ludicrous mode speed upgrade will get you to that 60 mph mark in a claimed 3.2 seconds; you might want to hide these keys from your teenagers.
Its falcon rear wing doors, considered a bold move by many, will fold up and out of the way to allow easy access to its forward-facing third row seats; these doors will come with built in sensors for safe opening in garages of any height. Consumers can also expect, an automatically retracting rear spoiler, free long distance travel on Tesla’s supercharger network, parking sensors, blind spot warning and automatic emergency parking.
The standard model will be be priced $5,000 more than the Tesla Model S for sale, which starts at approximately $70,000; and if you are just getting around to reserving yours, the delivery estimate is now set for early 2016 (believe what you must). Musk, ever the tease, provided information about the Tesla Model 3 for sale, for which we should expect a $35,000 price tag and a March unveiling. Do not, however, expect production until late 2017.
