1957 BMW 507 Roadster Sets Record Price At Auction
John Surtees’ spectacular 1957 BMW 507 Roadster just broke some records at Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 auction. Bonhams just sold this BMW 507 Roadster for a $5,026,522, making it the most expensive BMW 507 ever, and quite possibly the most expensive BMW ever sold. The BMW 507 Roadster was expected to sell for between $2.6-2.9 million, it almost doubled expectations with the $5 million dollar purchase.
This classic BMW was the third most expensive car to ever be sold at Goodwood. Only two cars sold for more including a 1932 Alfa Romeo Tipo B Gran Prix Monoposto, which sold for over $6 million, and a 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato “MP209”, which sold for a record breaking $13.2 million. The Aston Martin was sold last week at the same auction as the BMW 507 Roadster. These two recent record breaking sales should encourage classic car investors and enthusiasts that the market is stronger than ever when it comes to collector grade classic cars.
The BMW 507 is widely known and acknowledged as the most beautiful BMW ever made, it’s one of the most beautiful roadsters of all time and John Surtees’ car is even more special and considered to be much more valuable than the other examples floating around. It’s hard to imagine someone spending over $5 million on this classic BMW, but price dictates the market, and the market saw value in this rare specimen. There were certain modifications that Surtees had BMW install, this is why his car is faster and slightly sharper than the other 507 Roadsters.
