Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG 003

The man who commissioned the Ferrari P4/5—a seminal one-off sports car with the mechanicals of an Enzo and the body of a Ferrari P-Series racecar from the 1960s—has decided to build his very own sports car from the ground-up, using his own team. James Glickenhaus’s Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG 003 is a I-can’t-believe-that’s-street-legal racing prototype which just placed 35th in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and hopes to eventually sell well enough to become homologated for Le Mans. Let’s meet the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG 003, the vehicle that carries Glickenhaus’s vision for how racing should be approached—flat out.

SCG 003 S vs. SCG 000 C

The SCG 003 was initially planned as a racing car only, but intense interest from private parties created enough demand to where the Scuderia saw fit to produce a street-legal version as well. Those familiar with the naming conventions of Italian sports car manufacturers will quickly grasp that the racing model is designated with a “C” for “Competizione” and that the road-going model is designated with an “S,” for “Stradale.”

Glickenhaus plans to offer strictly road and strictly race versions, as well as a separate “road-to-race/race-to-road” version which can be swapped back and forth with a conversion kit. Making the swap between road and race version are made possible by the carbon fiber chassis’s modular architecture, which is a fancy way for implying that parts are easily interchangeable—like Legos. Glickenhaus mentions that the entire rear assembly including engine, rear suspension, and gearbox can be swapped with the removal and replacement of just six nuts.

Styling and Engine’s Straight from Le Mans Racecars

Visible in the SCG 003’s styling is a nod to the LMP1/LMP2 class of cars currently competing is Le Mans, with a hint of the P4/5 throw in for good measure. Design work was carried out by GranStudio, founded by noted Flemish designer Lowie Vermeersch, who previously worked at Pininfarina.

The engine in the racing version is a 530-hp 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, derived from Honda Performance Development’s (HPD) line of V6s, popular racing engines used in different guises ranging from IndyCar to Le Mans. Customer vehicles will be offered the choice of a twin-turbo V6 or a twin-turbocharged V12, neither of which whose specifications are yet available.

SCG has announced the 003 S will start at roughly $2.5 million with a $1.15 million premium for the 003 C. Orders have already been taken for the 003 C while the 003 S is set to go on sale this autumn. So if you ever see what you believe to be a stolen LMP1 racecar terrorizing the streets of Manhattan, resist the urge to call the authorities and thank the heavens that car enthusiasts as dedicated and crazy as James Glickenhaus exist.
