McLaren 675LT Super Series Unleashed

When it comes to exotic cars, the new McLaren 675LT coupe definitely presents a pretty — and very appealing — package for sports car enthusiasts. It’s exclusive (limited to 500 units), features the legendary Longtail moniker (LT), and it’s both the lightest and most powerful model in the Super Series lineup. Need I say more?

The 675LT made its world debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. It draws inspiration from the company’s Le Mans racer: the 1997 McLaren F1 GTR Longtail that derives from the history-making F1 GTR that roamed the tracks in ’95. The British carmaker describes the LT version as having “pushed physical boundaries and technical regulations to the absolute limit.” No wonder McLaren’s new coupe is now the most driver-focused vehicle in the Super Series family.

Expect more power, less weight and enhanced precision from the 675LT, which comes fitted with a re-engineered V-8 Twin Turbo. The engine churns out a total 666 ponies and 516 pound-feet of torque — 25 horsepower and 16 lb-ft more than the McLaren 650S for sale — and is paired to a quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The model has a top speed of 205 miles per hour, a zero-to-62 acceleration time of 2.9 seconds, and it can sprint to 124 mph in 7.9 seconds.

And while the new 675LT beast delivers more power from its turbocharged machine, it drops 220 pounds compared to its McLaren sibling, due in part to materials such as carbon fiber bodywork. As a result, the supercar not only benefits from 40 percent more downforce, but also a power-to-weight ratio of 549PS per tonne that the automaker claims is better than the vehicle’s more established competitors. As the British manufacturer so eloquently put it, “Power, with minimal weight, is a beautiful thing.”

Lightweight forged alloy wheels, Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo R tyres, carbon ceramic brakes, and a thinner windscreen have also helped the McLaren 675LT drop a few pounds. Overall, the coupe weights in at a dry 1,230kg (2,712 pounds), which is lighter than the Ferrari 458 Speciale, Ferrari 488, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and Lamborghini Huracan.

Inside the vehicle, the carbon fiber racing seats, dashboard and three-spoke steering wheel are trimmed in Alcantara. And there is less electronic intervention in order to enhance driver engagement.

All 500 units of McLaren’s new supercar have been sold, but we’re hoping the automaker decides to produce a few more.
